The
community of La Herrada
lies on the outskirts, but is very much a part, of the town of Los
Montesinos. It is most conveniently located, being only a 10-15 minute
journey by car into Torrevieja - a substantial city to the south of
Alicante airport on the Costa Blanca, Spain. There are miles of white
sandy beaches which stretch north from Torrevieja as far as Santa
Pola and similarly to the south as far as the Mar Menor. In the area,
just north of Torrevieja, is the city of Guadamar del Segura with
superb beaches, shops and restaurants. Use the "Regional Maps"
link on the left to locate these places.
The
urbanisation is situated inland from - and overlooks - two coastal
lakes known as the "Salinas de Torrevieja" and the "Salinas
de La Mata", both being natural salt lakes which are still being
worked. The lakes are also
home to a multitude of wildlife,
in particular about 130 different species of birds amongst which are
the pink flamingoes for
which the area is well-known.
To
find Los Montesinos from the El Altet airport (just south of the city
of Alicante) you take the A332 coast road and drive south for about
40 minutes, exiting right just after the town of Guademar del Segura
onto "Lemon Tree Road", and following the signs for Los
Montesinos. You will make a left turn at the roundabout where you junction
into the CV90 (905). You should not have any difficulty if you print
off the maps shown on the following links:
