NEWSBOX (BICYCLE THEFTS)

From the President:

Letter received byemail:-

Hi John,
We had yet another theft of a bicycle over Sunday night 15th Jan. Thieves managed to get over the high wall next door to me and stole a new mountain bike.
Can you please advertise on the web site in case anyone saw or heard something.
There have been a number of thefts of bicycles at about 9pm on Sunday.
Dilwyn

Apart from the one stolen from Dilwyn's road, two more were taken from Calle Taray with an attempt made to take a further three. When the police were called they were in the process of checking on thefts from further up the urbanisation. We were told that the bikes were being loaded into a white transit van and that the police were aware of it. Cannot give you any details of the stolen bikes only that one of them was a very expensive racing bike.

A local girl went to the police yesterday to get a police number for insurance purposes.

I have in the past put a notice on the community web warning owner's of theft of bikes so everyone who looks on the web page would have been aware of the risk of leaving property exposed to any would be robber.

John

NEWSBOX (Non-resident Owners Bank Accounts)
- posted July 31st, 2008.

If you own a property in Spain, but you are not actually in the country for 180 days or more in any year, you may find some interesting reading in this forum:

http://www.torrevieja.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=34834

Addendum (August 8th, 2008):
The latest information on this story is that non-resident homeowners apparently only need to contact their bank. Mmost banks will sort it out the non-residence certificate at a cost of approx. 20 euros.

NEWSBOX (ALERT)

Pine Processionary Caterpillars (30/1/2012)

La Herrada residents have reported as follows:

"They have made nests there in the pine trees and are about early this year due to the milder weather, as you probably know they pose a danger to people, children especially and can be deadly to dogs.
We have been to the town hall and seen Loly who is asking the park maintenance to go and sort them out, hopefully quickly."

Here is the Wikipedia information for you:

The larva is a major forest pest, living communally in large "tents", usually in pine trees but occasionally in cedar or larch, marching out at night in single file (hence the common name) to feed on the needles. There are often several such tents in a single tree. When they are ready to pupate, the larvae march in their usual fashion to the ground, where they disperse to pupate singly on or just below the surface.

The larvae should never be handled as the abundant hairs on their bodies cause extreme irritation (Urticaria) to the skin. 5th stage larvae can eject hairs when threatened or stressed; the hairs, which have the form of harpoons, then penetrate and irritate all areas of exposed skin nearby with an urticating protein. Allergic reactions may follow in susceptible individuals on subsequent exposure to the hairs.

Fabre conducted a famous study on the processionary pine larvae where a group of them were attached nose-to-tail in a circle with food just outside the circle; they continued marching in the circle for a week. The caterpillars may follow a trail of pheromones or silk, but the main stimuli that induce following are from the hairs (setae) on the end of the abdomen of the caterpillar in front.

SOME GOOD ADVICE (from Neighbourhood Watch, Spain)

There is crime in Spain, as in any other country. Although the level of opportunistic crime on the Urbanisation had dropped significantly and is far lower than in the UK, we still need to be alert and report suspicious activity to the Policia Local. [Tel: 966 721 525].

And so what can be done? The best and only practical advice is to be extra vigilant during the holiday months - roughly from May to October. Here are some habits you can adopt, whether resident or visitor, which will make it more difficult for these people:

1) Never leave windows, doors, blinds and grills open - or unlocked - when you leave your villa or apartment, even if you are just popping out to the local supermarket, or to visit a neighbour.

2) When you are at home, or going to bed, do not leave keys or other valuables in view through windows. Put them into sideboards, cupboards, drawers, under the beds; anywhere, just so long as they are out of sight.

3) Keep an eye out for suspicious people who appear to be sizing up properties. They may just be house-hunters; but remember, house-hunters usually have an agent with them. And they don't look away when they see you have noticed them!

4) If you are a visitor (to your own property, or if you are only renting) make sure you are not observed when you first arrive - whether from the airport by rental car or by taxi. Your suitcases are a dead give-away and many of the burglaries reported have occured within the first 3-4 hours of arrival. Why? Because the first thing people do after arrival is go to the shops to buy the basics for the refrigerator! Always let just ONE person do the shopping and don't leave the property unattended for the first few hours.

If you follow the above advice you could save yourself many frustrating hours trying to explain what has happened (in Spanish, to a Spanish-speaking policeman who will not be totally sympathetic!) why you need a new passport.
